Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Nacogdoches would evolve into the town of Nacogdoches. Margil personally supervised the establishment of two more missions. He located San Miguel de Linares de los Adaes east of the Sabine within the contested land claimed by both France and Spain. The last mission, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de los Ais, would later become the town St. Augustine. The following year St. Denis returned to Mexico to claim his bride. Not wanting to waste the trip, he escorted a caravan of contraband goods to Bautista.

In a word, it's readable. It is difficult to imagine a volume presented in a more professional manner than this one. It has a thesis-level substance yet it is clear enough to be accessible to anyone with an interest in history. There are volumes that can put you to sleep even after your morning coffee, but this one can keep you awake at night. It seems no adobe brick was left unturned in the research for this book. Anyone can report facts, but Edmondson aims higher: His writing illuminates rather than decorates and shows, not the shadow but the substance of his subjects.

True to his promise to the viceroy, he christened it San Antonio de Valero. Immediately construction began on temporary log structures. Four days later Alarcon located his presidio three-quarters of a league up the creek at the springs. The governor could be political, too. He named it San Antonio de Bexar after the viceroy's brother, the Duke of Bexar, who had died heroically defending Budapest from the Turks.
